2017 release of “Ready Resource for Relief Society”

Deseret News Book Review:

“The Ready Resource for Relief Society — Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Gordon B. Hinckley” by Trina Boice is an engaging and simplified way of integrating the essential LDS Church teachings into Relief Society meetings. Because of the thoughtful, teaching-focused way the book is compiled, teachers can focus on creating a unique experience within their classes.

This book may be particularly helpful for newer teachers who are looking for additional resources because it includes hymns, quotes and handouts that help simplify lesson planning. Lesson plans are also included, which can allow teachers more time to personalize the lessons and removes the stress of creating an appropriate lesson while amplifying the learning experience.

It can also help supplement a teacher or student’s other readings while learning about the doctrine. The teachings of President Gordon B. Hinckley, the 15th president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are thoroughly detailed with a unique perspective and a focus on the essential scriptures that allows for a valuable but unique learning experience.

Overall, Boice has crafted a well-executed and incredibly helpful collection of teaching resources.

2016 release of “Ready Resource for Relief Society”

Deseret News book review:

In 2016, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints’ Relief Society and priesthood classes are studying the teachings of the late prophet President Howard W. Hunter. Trina Boice has put together “The Ready Resource for Relief Society: Howard W. Hunter” to supplement the church manual for these lessons.

In this resource, each lesson has its own chapter including supplemental material such as hymns for the week’s topic, quotes and LDS Church magazine articles. There is also suggested, music, video and artwork to enhance the lesson. Boice also includes object lessons for the teacher to use and weekly challenges for them to issue to their class.

Two teaching tools also included in each chapter are scripture mastery scriptures that relate to the material and corresponding chapters to study in “Preach My Gospel,” another study manual put out by the LDS Church. Boice even includes a handout to be copied for the class.

The introduction explains all content as well as gives tips to become a better teacher.

This book is a great companion for the Relief Society instructor teaching out of the “Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Howard W. Hunter” this year.

2015 release of “Base Hits and Home Run Relationships”

Deseret News book review:

When it comes to the game of love, everyone strikes out from time to time. And some people feel they can’t even figure out the rules.

Luckily, author Trina Boice, who is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and her oldest son, who she dubs, “Coach Cooper,” a recent Brigham Young University graduate, are here to help with the book “Base Hits and Home Run Relationships: What Women Wish Guys Knew.”

This baseball-themed book about dating and relationships, including marriage and pleasantly passes along solid advice and gentle humor, whether the reader just needs a few pointers on improving that batting average or relationship, or the opposite sex seems to be playing a whole different game.

Each chapter contains Trina Boice’s introduction, a baseball comic, Coach Cooper’s input, advice for women titled “A League of Their Own” and four activities at the end, with varying levels of difficulty noted by a single, a double, a triple and a home run. In one of the chapters, the double is talking to a woman the man previous doesn’t know, the triple is talking to a woman who usually isn’t the guy’s type, and home run is asking a woman out who he feels is out of his league.

The baseball analogy gets a little cheesy, of course, but it shows that this book does not take itself too seriously, preventing the preachiness that pervades too many self-help books. It was also refreshing to get both young and old and male and female perspectives. The activities really set this book apart. The single, double, triple and home run options allow readers to progress at their own pace, but add specificity to what had to be a rather generic book.

Many, many dating books exist. However, the beauty of “Base Hits and Home Run Relationships” is that it does not become obsolete at any point of the dating process — even after marriage. The authors share reminders that the core of any home run relationship at any age is the right balance of selflessness and self-respect.

“Base Hits and Home Run Relationships” is primarily aimed at LDS men, but there are sections targeted at women. It would be a great resource for men or women looking to improve their interpersonal skills. Teenage boys and new husbands especially will find some valuable information in “Base Hits.”

2015 release of “Ready Resource for Relief Society”

Deseret News book review:

In the recent “Ready Resource for Relief Society,” Trina Boice shares teaching tips, songs, references, graphics, suggested quotes, videos, links and other resources correlate with chapters from “Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Ezra Taft Benson,” the 2015 manual for Relief Society and Melchizedek priesthood quorums of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In addition to helping to prepare a Relief Society lesson, it provides a format for independent learning, especially for anyone who may miss a lesson. A brief synopsis of each topic is provided along with related hymns and material for handouts. Boice also includes a weekly challenge for teachers to invite students to apply what they learned.

While “Ready Resource for Relief Society,” does not replace the Benson manual, it has a wide variety of tools, general ideas to aid in teaching lessons and tips for different teaching styles.

Filled with notes about church articles, seminary scripture mastery verses and correlating topics in the LDS Church’s “Preach My Gospel” missionary manual, Boice’s work can help enhance the joy of learning and sharing the gospel

2014 release of “Ready Resource for Relief Society”

Deseret News book review:

Author Trina Boice has compiled “Ready Resource for Relief Society,” a lesson tool for Relief Society teachers in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This book can serve as a supplemental tool for the 2014 LDS Church manual focusing on the teachings of President Joseph Fielding Smith.

The introduction of “Ready Resource” has tips for using the book and for teaching a lesson in general, such as teaching with the Spirit, different teaching styles and how to use the tools mentioned in each chapter.

Each chapter correlates with one lesson from the Joseph Fielding Smith manual and includes hymns to sing, a lesson summary and related quotes, gospel art and videos. Each chapter also suggests LDS Church articles to supplement the lesson, scripture mastery scriptures, object lessons and a lesson handout.

2014 release of “My Future’s So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades”

Deseret News book review:

“My Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades: An LDS Teen’s Guide to Success” provides uplifting and inspiring life advice for youths and young adults as they navigate a world that’s always changing.

Author Trina Boice encompasses a “glasses” theme throughout the book, tying different styles of glasses with the many avenues and choices of life. Using a sense of wittiness and spirituality, Boice also enlists the aid of illustrator Brittany Long in providing humorous comic strips throughout the book.
Some of the glasses themes include reading glasses and why education is important, groucho glasses and why humor is important, rose-colored glasses in relation to the “green grass” syndrome and granny glasses to explain that life is shorter than expected.
Boice uses personal life experiences, and she quotes individuals, some famous, as she shares life advice, including from Especially for Youth singer Jenny Jordan Frogley, author Deirdra Eden and two-time Golden Glove champion Antonio Reyna. Focusing primarily on her experience as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Boice cultivates a hands-on experience throughout the book and encourages readers to write down their own thoughts, impressions and goals.

Boice is clean in humor, language and illustrations, and there is no violence or sexual innuendos. A chapter on pornography and chastity is included, and the topic is discussed tactfully.

Illustrator Long was raised in Las Vegas and graduated from Southern Utah University with a bachelor’s degree in English. Her daily comics are at comicdiaries.com.

Boice lives in Las Vegas where she teaches classes at Le Cordon Bleu School for Culinary Arts. She is the author of 17 books and is the entertainment news editor for Bella Online.

2013 “Ready Resource for Relief Society”

Deseret News book review:

Trina Boice has created a masterpiece about LDS Church President Lorenzo Snow.

“The Ready Resource for Relief Society: Teachings of Presidents of the Church — Lorenzo Snow,” is a one-stop search reference for anything you could possibly need to assist with teaching a lesson in Relief Society.

Included in the book that is designed to go hand-in-hand with the “Teachings of Presidents of Church — Lorenzo Snow” are hymn suggestions, church art photo suggestions with the reference numbers included, quotes from LDS Church leaders including the prophets, object lessons, even printouts that are designed to be handout reminders.

There are suggestions for videos to be viewed, church magazine articles that tie in with the topic, messages on LDS.org and more. There are also suggestions with contact information for possible Relief Society service projects.

Not only is this book the ultimate in lesson help, but it is a excellent resource for personal study.

The book is a spiritually uplifting and enjoyable read in addition to being a wonderful trove of information.

For a Relief Society leader or teacher, it will be an excellent reference.
